My Adventures at BEA 2012 - Day 1

Day 1 - Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

My first signing at BEA was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  I absolutely loved her books Sharp Objects and Dark Places.  When I found out that she had a new book out, I was soooo excited. When I found out she was signing at the Random House booth, I was downright giddy.

Luckily, my friend Lisa who acts as my "handler" and sometimes "clone" at BEA when she isn't waiting on her own line knew I wanted to get Deb Harkness's book, Shadows of Night.  It was on the schedule for later that day, but Lisa found out it was moved to the morning.

Then it was off to the autographing area to get a copy of Point of Origin by Amanda Harvard.

I dashed back to the Random House book to wait in line for Justin Cronin's signing of The Twelve.  Above is my handler Lisa who was very excited to meet him.

I ran into Olivia.

While I was perusing the Flux booth, the author of The City's Son, Tom Pollock came by and autographed his book.

After that I found my way to the Melissa Marr signing line to get a copy of Carnival of Souls.

There was (and is) a lot of buzz about Carnival of Souls and although the people were being put through quickly, Melissa Marr made the time to speak to everyone.

Just to give you an idea.  This is what the exhibition floor looks like at certain times.  To get away from crowds, you need to navigate to the outer aisles.

When I read that Amy Garvey, author of Glass Heart, grew up wishing she was Samantha Stephens from Bewitched, I knew I had to get her book.

This is the autographing area.  Authors are scheduled at numbered tables at certain times.  It can get rather confusing trying to determine which line belongs to which table and author, but basically people just keep asking, "Which line is this?" until they find the end of the one they want.  Also, sometimes if you are on a long line, people will hold your place so you can run to a shorter line to get a different autograph.

Since the autographing area is near the children's books booths, this rock star showed up to promote his new book.  Sorry, I was too enamored with his furry face to find out the title.

Yep, Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Boys had one of the longest lines at BEA as well.

I was also able to get a copy of Innocent Darkness by Suzanne Laear.  I love the cover!

After the first day of craziness, me and Maria from The Serpentine Library went to the event The Apocolapsies:  Meet the Authors of 2012's Must Reads, also at the Javits Center.  Authors mingled among attendees and prizes were given.

Zoraida Cordova author of Vicious Deep chats with Maria.

Me and Gretchen McNeil, author of Possess and Ten.

Leah Clifford, author of A Touch Mortal and A Touch Morbid and Maria.

Stay tuned for more posts documenting the rest of BEA week!

Oh I am super jealous you got a copy of Shadows of Night. I am so ready to get my hands on a copy! Carnival of Souls sounds like it will be a fantastic read. I can't wait to see what you think about it.

Hopefully I can make it to BEA next year.

@Karen-I find it amazing we were in the same lines and barely saw each other.

@Julie-Yes, that is one of the highlights of BEA, meeting authors.

@Steph-NP!

@Jayla-I was very fortunate this year! Yes, you should try to make BEA one year.

AH! You were in the Suzanne Lazaer line? We probably stood next to each other and didn't know it.

Weren't people awesome about letting you run for another book while you were in line? I loved that people were so chill about that. They understood.
