Book Blogger Confessions (Monday, June 4, 2012)

Book Blogger Confessions is a meme hosted by Tiger from All Consuming Media and Karen from For What It's Worth Reviews to discuss issues unique to book bloggers. To find out details, click HERE.

Question for Monday June 4th: Choosing your next book. How do you decide which book to read next? How do you balance “review” reading with “fun” reading?

Answer: Except on rare occassions, I don't really "do" review reading because I'm a committment phobe and I don't want the pressure.  I like to be able to read what I want.  So, most reading is "fun" reading for me.  It's hard for me to decide which book to read next (remember committment phobe) and I usually don't know until I pick it up.  If I'm working on a Challenge I may gravitate towards those books that fulfill the requirements, but usually it just depends on my mood.  Sometimes I'll read the first few pages and if they don't grab me at the time I'll put it down for later.

I like that you have never really engaged in review requests. I honestly would like to become a review request free blog, but I do enjoy working with authors and publishers I have relationships with...

very cool with review requests and not having reason to read them.

that's great that you just read what you want!

@Smash-It seems you *do* have a great relationship with authors and publishers...I wouldn't change!

@Julie & @Carrie - It's very freeing. I like to talk about books that I want to read, not that I have to read.

I'm a commitment phobe also. I realized that i can't do "review" books.
I don't accept very many anyway. I think in two years I accepted less than 10 from pubs. It's the indie/self pubs that really killed me. I said yes to too many in the early days and got overwhelmed.

I go through pretty serious phases where any book I receive for review isn't something I want to read. Even if it's a Nalini Singh book. I sat on The Calling for WEEKS before picking it up. That's when I know I have to pick up something, anything that I am in no way obliged to read. To stave off the feeling, though, I'm trying to alternate review books with free choice books. It's helped so far, but then I had to start reminding myself that a "free choice book" could be a review book, too. Oh, the ruts I get myself into.
