World Book Night - US

Just last week I was perusing The Voracious Reader website when I saw that they still needed a few more people to be "Givers" for World Book Night 2012.  I called right away, extremely excited, got the deets and I was officially a Giver!  I roped Maria from The Serpentine Library into the plan as well.
Francine, owner of The Voracious Reader, looks on as Maria opens her Giver box.
Maria gets to give out Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson.
I get to give out Bel Canto by Ann Patchett.
Fast forward to last night, April 23, 2012.  I was able to give out the books in a nursing home and a local hospital.  Some people were confused, some people got it, but they were all thrilled and it was a great experience. I wanted a picture of my friend with the book.  She balked at first and then said, "I will if it means something to you."  I was touched by her spirit of giving.

World Book Night was so much fun and I cannot wait to do it again next year!

My friend, "N", peruses Bel Canto.

What a wonderful thing to do! I hope when I'm all old and locked up somewhere, people like you bring me cool books. I also hope they'll bring cookies, because cookies and books just kind of go together...

What awesome locations to give out to! It's not an organized thing in Canada yet, so I collected a bunch of my book (of which we all have overflowing bookshelves of, am I right?) and I hit the streets and hid them all over the west end of Toronto. In newspaper boxes, in video stores, in coffee shops. It was so much fun I'd like to make it a regular thing!
