Q: What is one book that you would be nervous to see a movie adaption of because you think the movie could never live up to the book?

A: Ems from In Which Ems Reviews Books had a great answer with her choice of The Night Circus. I think the beauty and magic of that novel would be very difficult to adapt to the big screen, especially in under two hours.

I often wonder how one of my favorite books, Swan Song by Robert McCammon would translate to a film.  I think a book like that, which is similar in scope to The Stand by Stephen King would only work if, like The Stand, it was done as a miniseries.   I admit though, that I do like when my favorite books are made into movies because I like seeing a different "interpretaton."  I usually don't go in with high expectations anyway, because it is often difficult to create a version that is as good as the one I see in my imagination.

Aww, shucks!

I think that books do translate better when done as a miniseries. I love it when the filmmakers have the time to treat the book the way it ought to be treated. It's why I loved the series 'Lark Rise to Candleford'...a book that could *maybe* work as a film, but was brilliant as a BBC miniseries.

Great answer!

Hopping through. Very much agree about The Night Circus. It could be a beautiful movie but the visuals wouldn't capture the magic.

I also enjoy seeing different interpretations so adaptations rarely bother me.

Here's my Friday Hop. Stop by if you get a chance.

You're right about some books translating better to a mini-series!

I just finished The Night Circus. I would LOVE to see it as a movie. If it is done well, it could be amazing. Baz Luhrmanm could do it. He'd be the perfect director.

I agree, I'd rather see some novels as miniseries- can't you just see The Night Circus on HBO? Okay, yes, there'd have to be a lot more nudity and sex, but they'd have the time and budget to bring it to life like they've done The Game of Thrones. It spans so much time, and so many characters that I just don't know if it could be done on the big screen without sacrificing so many wonderful characters.

And I also try to separate books from their movies, that way I'm usually pleasantly surprised when the movies don't suck. ;)

I don't really like to see any books made into movies even when they do a great job.
My imagined image is always replaced by the actors and directors vision.
I think most of the novels I enjoy would be better as series on cable. That way you have time to explore the characters and plot. It's hard to cram everything in to 2 hours.
A few exceptions would be where the book wasn't so detailed because then you would have a chance to expand on it.

They always leave so much out of the movies (and make things up, too).

New Follower!!! :-D

Expectations for movies after they're AMAZING in the imagination is hard to live up to, any day. Any book. The Night Circus seems to be a an extra imagineative choice!!!

I haven't read The Night Circus yet, but from what I have seen in reviews I think it would be pretty hard to get all that in a movie.
