My two cents: NYC, BEA & BBC

I know, I know.  You probably don't need any more help regarding New York City and BEA/BBC.  I don't technically live *in* the City, so I'm certainly no expert and there are tons of other helpful posts.  However, I do go into Manhattan often, so I just thought I would mention a few things that might be helpful.

My Favorite Parking Garage:
There is a good self parking garage on W. 42nd street between 9th and 10th (on the north side of the street).  I can't remember the name, I just know where it is and I use it often when I go to midtown.  Since 42nd street is a two way street you may want to circle around and head east down 42nd street (toward the Hudson River) so you can easily make a right turn into the garage.  I used this last year during BEA and I was able to unload my books a few times without having to bother parking attendants to unlock or even retrieve my car.  I don't feel the prices are any better or worse than other parking garages.  I just happen to like this one.

This is Icon's logo.
However, while trying to find the exact name of the above parking garage, I came across this website for Icon Parking.  If you look to the right there is a button where you can calculate parking prices.  It seems that the two at the top of the list, (Westside 42 Parking and JD's Parking) have a special that if you get in before 10am it is only $15.00 all day as long as you park for only 12 hours or under.  These parking garages are valet only.

Someone also told me to park at the Port Authority.  I've never done this, but here is a link to the site.  Scroll to the bottom for information on parking.

My Favorite website to help me navigate through NYC:
I use the site Hopstop all the time.  It really helps me get around the Big Apple.  It gives step by step directions to anywhere in the City.  You can make a choice if you want to find your route via subway, bus or by foot.

My favorite cheap place to eat off Times Square:
Cafe Edison @ 228 W 47th St (Btwn Broadway & 8th Ave).  I found this restaurant when I walked down a side street to escape the suffocating crowds of Times Square one day.  Cafe Edison is located right off the Edison Hotel and it may look like a run down eatery, but the food is great, the price is right and the service has always been good when I've eaten there.  I've never had to wait too long for a table either.  Click HERE to see what Roadfood.com says about it.

Oh yeah, and for those who have questioned me on this, yes you can jaywalk.  Cross at red lights, outrun traffic, play live Frogger.  In fact, it's expected.  I've even been encouraged by a police officer.

I hope everyone has an excellent and safe trip!

Hi Pam,

There's an Icon parking garage on 41st that offers "event rate" parking for BEA. It's across from the Croatian Catholic Church, just west of the corner of 10th and 41st and only 2 blocks from the Javits center. I think it's $30. As for Port Authority parking, it's cheap, safe, and very close to the convention center, but it's REALLY tough to find the entrance unless you're coming in through the Lincoln Tunnel. Try coming in southbound on 10th, hang a left on 40th, and look for a ramp immediately on the right marked "Park and Lock."

See you there!
